Realms of Myth
Kingsbridge welds the kingdom of Shanria into a strong whole. The core of Kingsbridge was built by the Caladorans (analogous to the Romans), but has since grow to three time the width of Old London bridge, while still being clad in the same encrustation of houses and shops, but with the addition of courts, closes and alleyways, towering halls and soaring towers, including merchant guild halls representing merchants from dozens of countries, in some places a dozen stories high.
The road has three levels, the bottom most for freight, completely enclosed and lit by lamplight, the middle level for the commonalty, punctuated at regular intervals with small squares looking out on the Straits, letting the light in, and the uppermost level, open to the air except for where it travels through a tunnel under a cross-block hall, for which passage rather a steep toll is charged.
The bridge is a municipality and port in its own right, held directly in the king’s hand, along with the 4 castles that govern and protect it (one at each end and one on either side of the deep channel in the middle). At the feet of the two castles that frame the deep channel are moorings used every spring to hold the ships coming into Fallond for the Great Faire, the Crown Fête. Here, every ship entering or returning to the realm must first check in, to be passed on to either Fallond or Bridgeport for the paying of duties and receiving the king’s cocket (seal) to attest to that payment having been made, and then to be directed to the proper Staple port for the completion of their business (unless there is no Staple for the goods carried).
